Travelling with a dog can be fun

There is a plethora of dog-friendly activities you can do while travelling.

Bear in mind that some cities, states, and even countries have different stances on being dog-friendly, especially if it is a big dog or deemed ‘dangerous’.

You also have to be careful with the other wildlife. Having a dog off-leash in rural areas with dangerous wildlife can be a recipe for disaster.

But if you are diligent and careful you and your furry companion can have a great time together.

The allure of a road trip with your dog is unparalleled, providing the perfect opportunity to discover hidden gems, picturesque landscapes, and dog-friendly pit stops along the way.

This is especially true if you have a good setup with travel gear and transportation. An RV is ideal but many people are opting for the van life experience with their canines. But with the right equipment, even a (medium to large) car is ample space as long as you have a good camping or hotel setup.

If you are looking for travel gear for your pet then check out PetTravelGear.org and set up the right way for your trip.

So what can we do with our furry friends while travelling to keep everyone entertained?

Plan a beach getaway where your pup can splash in the waves and bask in the sun. Coastal destinations offer a perfect blend of fun and relaxation.

Just be sure to have something ready for the wet dog smell before getting back into your car, van, or RV.

3. Historical Walking Tours:

Why not take your dog to see some of the best historical sites the city has to offer. Sure you won’t be able to go inside most places but a selfie with your pup outside the coliseum is still a fun and funny experience.

Remember to bring water for your pup and take breaks in the shade where possible.

4. Pet-Friendly Tours and Attractions:

Seek out tourist attractions that warmly welcome your furry friend, turning ordinary sightseeing into an adventure.

If you can’t find one perhaps do the training yourself.

Can you be a digital nomad with a pet?

I would say yes but a lot depends on the type of dog, the nature of your trip, the location, how long you are going for, and your pup's personality and temperament. Choosing a nomadic lifestyle, even if it is temporary, can be easier for us humans to digest but some dogs may find it difficult.

Understanding your dog will help determine whether it is good for them. The tips provided in this post and online should also help.

Dogs adore checking out fresh spots with you; it keeps their minds lively and buzzing. So, pretty much, your dog will dig the novel scents in places they haven't sniffed around before! 🐾

Safety and Comfort While Travelling With Your Dog

Ensuring your dog's well-being during travel involves a bit of thoughtful planning and consideration.

For instance, your dog may suffer from anxiety during travel, so accommodating to their needs is a must. Regular stops, and making sure they are as comfortable as possible are important factors.

You also may have to consider not going if it means a lot of stress for your dog.

Other tips to help your pup include:

  • Packing the familiar, bedding, and toys
  • Having a GPS tracker on your dog
  • Having a tag with your dog's name and your phone number on it
  • Making sure they are hydrated even in the vehicle
  • Investing in proper gear like seat belt restraints, harnesses, and travel crates if necessary
  • Health check before travel
  • Mindful temperature control
  • Pet First aid kit
  • Positive reinforcements
  • Dog-friendly travel meals

Not everywhere is pet friendly believe it or not. I did a road trip to Las Vegas with a dog and many hotels were not accepting dogs. I have to give a shout-out to the Delano Hotel. It’s not only an amazing hotel but the staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, even with the dog.

I recommend anyone travelling through Vegas with a dog to stay at the Delano if possible. Check out their prices and availability here. Or click on the image below.
