The best time to witness Machu Picchu in its full splendour is during June and July, offering clear skies and comfortable temperatures.
During our visit to Machu Picchu, my friends and I opted to explore without a tour guide. However, I must confess to unintentionally overhearing a guide share a fascinating insight. According to the guide, within the Incan empire, certain individuals were purposefully bred to become 'runners’ or Chaskis. These individuals were capable of covering significant distances, allowing messages to be swiftly delivered across the empire within a single day.

Cusco, the former capital of the Inca Empire, seamlessly blends ancient charm with a vibrant contemporary atmosphere. The best time to explore this cultural hub is during the dry season from May to September. Dive into the rich history of the city, visit the iconic Plaza de Armas, and don't miss the awe-inspiring Sacsayhuamán fortress.
I enjoyed Cusco; it exudes a fantastic atmosphere and for those that don't know it sits at a higher altitude than Machu Picchu! The nightlife is vibrant, boasting some excellent local bars. It's essential to note that the altitude can have an impact, so it's advisable to allow a couple of days for acclimatization. Initially, I attributed my altered breathing to low stamina, dismissing it. However, our host prepared some coca tea, known to alleviate altitude symptoms. That's when it clicked, and I realized my stamina was fine; it was the altitude causing the my breathing difficulties and yes it was noticeable.
Cusco is where many people stay before visiting Machu Pichu. We ended up getting a train which seemed to be the best and most popular option. Plus the train ride was amazing. Buy tickets in advance to avoid disappointment and expect around a 3-hour train journey each way.

Lima, the vibrant capital of Peru, beckons with a blend of historical richness and modern sophistication. Year-round, this coastal city invites exploration, but the ideal time is during the dry season from December to April. June and July offer pleasant weather, setting the stage for a journey through Lima's cultural gems.
I dedicated a full day to exploring Lima, a pleasantly unplanned discovery. A lengthy layover provided the perfect window for exploration. Approaching a taxi driver at the airport, I proposed a city tour, hitting the tourist hotspots and perhaps even grabbing a meal. Eager to showcase his city, the driver proposed a fixed price for an in-depth tour, accompanying me to attractions and unveiling a phenomenal food spot with the best ceviche I've ever tasted. This method offers a speedy city exploration, but it's prudent to settle half the payment upfront and the rest at the end.
The taxi driver's ambition extended to showcasing all of Lima, including its less affluent areas. While these neighbourhoods depicted stark poverty, they also posed safety concerns. I wouldn't recommend wandering there, day or night.
Solo travellers, particularly women, should exercise caution in Lima. A wrong turn might lead to potentially hazardous situations.
During my guide, the taxi driver, he showed me various ancient pyramids dotted around the city. I wasn’t aware there were so many, I visited one or two only to find them empty of people but full of historical knowledge.

Huacachina, a desert oasis surrounded by towering sand dunes, promises a thrilling adventure. The best time to visit is during the dry season from May to October. June and July offer cool temperatures for adrenaline-pumping activities like dune buggying and sandboarding.
We tried sandboarding in The Atacama Desert, Chile, which was our trip after Peru, and it was great fun, although surprisingly difficult at first. You also have to be in pretty good shape to go up the dune after each go.

If you are in Peru for an extended stay then I would suggest hiring a car, unless the majority of your stay is comprised of different places but quite near each other, like for example The Sacred Valley, the Inca Trail, Cusco, and Machu Picchu then you can get away with transfers and buses.
What to Pack
Pack smart for your Peruvian escapade. Essential items include sturdy hiking boots for trekking adventures, breathable layers for fluctuating altitudes, a reliable daypack, and, of course, a hat and sunscreen for protection under the Andean sun. For the Amazon, pack lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to combat the jungle's humidity and insect repellent for added comfort.
While Peru is a treasure trove of wonders, safety is paramount. Stick to well-travelled routes, be cautious with personal belongings, and stay informed about local customs and regulations. Hydrate adequately, especially in higher altitudes, and consider acclimatizing gradually to prevent altitude sickness.
