Travel gifts don't always have to come with a price tag. Some of the most cherished gifts for wanderers are the ones that cost nothing but thoughtfulness. Here, we explore a selection of free and meaningful gestures that will warm the hearts of your globetrotting friends and family.
Customized Travel Itinerary:
Craft a personalized travel itinerary for your loved one's upcoming adventure. Share your recommendations, hidden gems, and must-visit spots, transforming your knowledge into a priceless gift. This would be very thoughtful. If you have been to the country that the gift receiver is heading to, then adding in great restaurants, memorable attractions, and hidden gems would be great.
Local Phrases Guide:
Prepare a list of essential phrases in the local language of their next destination. This free gift can be a lifesaver and a key to immersing themselves in the culture. A great way to break the ice with a friendly local would be to include a phrase that is completely random and funny. “My sister eats raw potatoes”, I’m sure you’re imagination is better than mine with this. This may invoke a chuckle, this may make someone walk away.
Handwritten Letters:
In this digital age, a heartfelt handwritten letter carries immense sentimental value. Write a series of letters for them to open at different points during their journey, providing a comforting connection to home.
Photo Album or Collage:
Collect and compile your favourite travel memories with them into a photo album or collage. It's a beautiful way to relive adventures and reinforce the bonds of friendship. (There may be a charge to print this but you can keep it digital to save costs).
Cook a Local Dish Together:
Arrange a video call and cook a traditional dish from one of their past or future travel destinations. Share the joy of culinary exploration even when miles apart.
Travel Playlist:
Create a travel-themed playlist filled with songs that evoke the spirit of adventure. Music transcends borders and can be a source of comfort on long journeys.
Book Sharing:
If you're both bookworms, gift a travel novel or guidebook you've enjoyed in the past. It's a literary journey that can be passed on to others.
House-Sitting or Pet Sitting:
If you can, offer to take care of their home or pets while they're away, providing peace of mind and allowing them to travel worry-free.
Digital Art or Travel Doodles:
If you're artistically inclined, create digital art or travel doodles related to your trips. They can use these as screensavers or prints for their home. A great place to create travel art for free is Canva.
These free gifts showcase your thoughtfulness and effort, making them truly special. Sometimes, it's the intangible gestures that leave the most significant impact. Practical Gifts for Travel Lovers
Now let’s get into the nitty gritty, with the more practical gifts that I’m sure your travelling buddy will appreciate.
Carry-On Suitcase:
A must-have for any traveller, a quality carry-on suitcase ensures they can jet-set without worrying about checked luggage. It's compact, convenient, and encourages packing efficiency, making it a great choice for anyone going places. This carry-on suitcase from Amazon is very popular.
I only discovered these recently and they are a great help with packing. These nifty cubes are like puzzle pieces for your suitcase, keeping clothes organized and wrinkle-free. Perfect for those who seek order in the chaos of travel.
Sunglasses:
How much more practical can you get than sunglasses? I bought this pair of sunglasses from Amazon and after having the designer pairs when I was younger I can safely say these are so much better. I no longer believe you have to spend a ridiculous amount of money on sunglasses, in fact, it’s probably best that you don’t. Just make sure they are UV-protected, you can get them tested at your nearest opticians.
Packable Backpack:
When exploring new destinations, a packable backpack becomes a trusty companion. It's compact, lightweight, and invaluable for day trips or as an overflow bag for those travel treasures you can't resist. With my adventures, I always need a backpack and although I usually just use my normal backpack I would welcome a space-saving lightweight yet sturdy packable backpack.
A blank canvas for recording adventures, jotting down thoughts, or sketching memories. It's the ideal gift for someone who loves to document their travel experiences and reflect on their journeys.
Yep, that's right an old school world map booklet. I know everything is on the phone now but for those out of touch places a map could still very much come in handy.
Portable Charger:
In a world where staying connected is vital, a portable charger ensures your travel lover's devices stay powered up, whether they're navigating a new city or capturing picturesque landscapes. Great deals for a fast charger can be found on Amazon.
Perhaps a step up from your normal portable charger a solar-powered charger is probably ideal for nature enthusiasts, a solar-powered charger keeps their devices running with the power of the sun, perfect for remote adventures.
Noise-Cancelling Headphones:
Travel can be noisy, and these headphones provide a sanctuary of serenity. Perfect for long flights, crowded buses, or even just enjoying some peaceful moments. Despite what you may think headphones do not have to be hundreds of pounds, there are plenty of choices for much less that provide great quality. Personally, the last thing I want to do when travelling is carry expensive possessions with me.
Travel Adapter:
A universal travel adapter is a versatile gift for jet-setters. It ensures their devices stay charged, no matter where in the world their adventures take them. Check out this adapter that is useful in any country you go to.
Collapsible Water Bottle:
Stay eco-conscious while travelling with a collapsible water bottle. It's environmentally friendly and saves luggage space when not in use. These water bottles come in many shapes, designs, and sizes check out a selection of them here.
Quick-Dry Towel:
For those spontaneous dips in the ocean or last-minute pool sessions, a quick-dry travel towel is a game-changer. It's compact, lightweight, and dries in a flash. Again, this is a product that comes with many different colours, sustainability, cases and more check them out here.
RFID Passport Wallet:
Protecting personal information is crucial, especially when on the move. An RFID wallet helps keep sensitive data safe while exploring new horizons. These snazzy wallets on Etsy are great for all types of travellers, you can even have your initials personalised on them.
Travel-Friendly Toiletry Kit:
Compact toiletry kits with leak-proof bottles and organized compartments make life easier for travellers, ensuring they have their essentials at hand. This was something that I never knew I needed until I had it. A selection of various different travel kits can be found here.
For adventurous souls, a headlamp, especially a rechargeable one, is an indispensable tool for exploring dark caves, late-night hikes, or reading in a tent under the stars. When I was in Dubrovnik, I climbed Mount Srd, it wasn’t too tough but the time I went up there meant that on the way back it was dark and I didn't have the proper tools to see my way down safely. My phone battery had died so a headlamp would have made all the difference.
Travel can be tiring, but with an inflatable neck pillow, your wanderlust-filled friend can find comfort even on the most gruelling journeys. Inflatable Neck Pillow with lots of positive reviews.
First Aid Kit:
Safety first! A travel-sized first aid kit is a thoughtful gift to ensure they're prepared for any unexpected bumps on their voyage. General Medi mini first aid kit is a great example of a compact, useful first aid kit.
Rain can surprise you anywhere. A small, portable umbrella ensures they stay dry without lugging around a bulky one. I would say be mindful of the destination with this present, if they are spending their time in desert-like environments (like my stay in the Atacama Desert) then this may be pointless.
A Swiss Army knife or a similar multi-tool is the epitome of versatility, a handy companion for solving unexpected challenges during travel. You can check the TSA website for the rules on travelling with such tools.
OK so this is a bit of a luxury and a bit out there but this list is comprehensive after all. Now as an avid gym goer myself this isn't too bad of an idea. You should be mindful of the destination as in some countries it will probably be less hassle going to a masseuse.
Travel Food Subscription Box:
Part of an experience abroad is the food, local restaurants and cuisine are part of the fun but this could be a good idea for the busy travel buddy on a budget. Thespruceeats.com has a great blog on the best international food subscriptions.
When I was in Italy, I arrived at the tail end of summer, with only summer clothes, as time went on it started becoming noticeably colder. I had to purchase one of these jackets and didn’t leave the house without it. It’s nice visiting somewhere with great weather all year round but you never know how a day (or a week) can turn and a light jacket is always a good idea.
Gift these practical items, and your traveller will thank you for adding ease, convenience, and preparedness to their journey.

Compact speakers with great sound are perfect for sharing music on the go. Something else that doesn’t have to break the bank but can bring so much joy and comfort on travels. If you pair this with a ready-made playlist, it would make a very thoughtful present.
There have been many occasions where I needed this. Whether it’s taking pictures from underneath a waterfall, swimming in a sea, or paddle boarding on a lake (see. Horestooth Reservoir in Colorado), you no longer have to leave your phone in the car or worry about it in your bag.
Gift them a guidebook for their next destination or a place they dream of visiting. These little pockets of knowledge are immensely valuable, these were blogs before blogs existed. They also make great reading for long plane journeys.
Travel-Friendly Water Filter:
Ensure access to clean water anywhere in the world with a portable filter with ultraviolet sanitizer. I can’t recommend this highly enough, there have many times hiking where I have come across streams that seem fine but you just never know, at least with this, it gives peace of mind. There are many that are below the £50 mark however I personally recommend the Larq Bottle PureVis which is slightly more.
Eco-conscious travellers will appreciate a set of compact, reusable shopping bags. It seems these days we get charged for everything so why not give the gift of saving the pennies and the environment?
Compact board games are perfect for entertaining during downtime or delays. This would be a great icebreaker.
Travel Mug:
Keep beverages hot or cold on the go with a stylish travel mug. This would also be a nice reminder of you back home, as no matter where you are there is always time for tea. Etsy is usually the go-to place for a personalised mug.
Ensure a good night's sleep even in noisy environments.
Travel-Themed Jewellery:
Elegant and affordable jewellery with travel motifs to remind them of their adventures. I’m not one to use much gold, silver, or ‘bling’ especially when travelling to places I do not know but some type of inexpensive jewellery can add to your attire. Again, Etsy is known for its jewellery stores.
Introduce them to global cuisines with a cookbook from a destination they love or travelling to.

For coffee lovers, a portable espresso maker ensures a caffeine fix anywhere. It’s amazing how small these things can get. This is sure to save a traveller and coffee lover a penny or two.
These innovative suitcases come with built-in charging ports, tracking technology, and more. Some are even capable of automatically following you around the airport like a puppy.
A stylish and functional backpack designed for travellers with a taste for the finer things. I needed one of these to carry my laptop securely, which includes it being waterproof.
Multi-Day Tour or Experience:
Gift them a guided tour, such as a cooking class or adventure excursion at their travel destination. This is dependent on where the travel lover goes but TripAdvisor has many excursions to choose from no matter what the destination is.
