15. Rodeos
This is something I never imagined I'd sit through before my time in Colorado. Witnessing a rodeo in Colorado is an amazing opportunity to experience the exhilarating fun of this classic Western adventure.
I was shocked by the amount of genuine cowboys there are in Colorado. Living in England, this way of life is so very foreign but yet very refreshing to see. It's not for everyone of course but for me, the novelty of seeing cowboys (and cowgirls) hasn't worn off and I doubt it will any time soon. Where there are cowboys there are rodeos and I’d now recommend going to see a rodeo show if you can.
The most exciting part of the show was when they offered some of the crowd to enter the arena and withstand a few minutes, in a designated circle, with a raging bull steaming towards them, with no protection. The winner gets a few hundred dollars, and the loser(s) potentially get a sharp horn up their... side. I was asked to join in too but I like my life.
If you wish to see a rodeo in Colorado check out ColoradoInfo.com for more information on scheduled events.
14. Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is a breathtaking testament to nature's artistry. One of the world's most unique venues, it's nestled into the rugged rocks and hosts world-class artists for unforgettable performances.
This beautiful venue is open for visitors to see during the day for free. It would be ideal if you can catch a show while visiting but it's also a great place simply to visit.

13. Breweries
Colorado is known for its famous local breweries not least Budweiser and Coors. The mountain on the Coors logo is Wilson Peak one of Colorado's '14ers'.
For me, it's actually the local brews that are the ones to try. If you have a chance to pop into one of the many bars in Denver, I recommend trying a Hazy IPA from a local brewery, delicious. If it's not fun at the beginning of the night it probably will be at the end.
Check out this list of breweries on Tripadvisor where you can also book tours.
12. The many lakes including Horsetooth Reservoir
Colorado is home to many lakes and although some of them aren't being 'used' there are still many that are. Engaging in the array of activities these lakes present is a fantastic means of both passing the time and satiating your yearning for adventure.
Take, for instance, Horsetooth Reservoir located within Lory State Park. I've dedicated an entire blog to the wonders of Horsetooth, but the insights and recommendations for activities can seamlessly translate to the other lakes as well. Whether you're drawn to the tranquil allure of the waters or eager to embark on thrilling water sports, these lakes stand as alluring playgrounds for both relaxation and exhilaration.

11. Camping
Among the fun outdoor activities available, camping takes centre stage, allowing you to indulge your spirit of adventure amidst stunning landscapes.
During the summer, RVs, camper vans, or even the traditional act of pitching tents find their way to various corners, seeking out suitable spots. For camping enthusiasts, the beauty of Colorado becomes an abundant playground, offering an array of camping spots that cater to every taste and style.
If you're looking for places to camp in Colorado check out some cool spots at travelandleisure.com.
10. Estes Park
Mentioning Colorado immediately conjures images of the majestic Rocky Mountains. Part of the Rocky Mountains lies Estes Park, renowned for its various amounts of engaging fun activities, family-friendly pursuits, awe-inspiring vistas, serene lakes, and intriguingly, the historic Stanley Hotel—immortalized by none other than the iconic film, The Shining.
Estes Park opens its arms to those who seek an authentic connection with the outdoors. As you embark on your camping escapade, prepare to be swept away by the charm of this quaint town, the allure of its surroundings, and the endless possibilities for adventure.
The Stanley Hotel isn't just a high-quality and pleasant lodging option; it boasts a dedicated group of enthusiasts because of the factors outlined. This implies that it's not a budget-friendly stay, but if you're seeking a fantastic offer for your accommodations, it's worth having a look at some great options on Booking.com.

9. City of Denver
Most popular cities in the US are grand. Denver is no different, the capital of Colorado boasts many fun and exciting activities and could indeed have its own blog but I will mention a few that stand out.
The city's vibrant core pulsates with the energy of enthusiastic fans, drawn to iconic sports arenas like Coors Field, home of the Rockies, the Mile High stadium, where the Broncos dominate, and the courts that the Nuggets call their own. The atmosphere is electric, and the camaraderie among fans is infectious, creating an unmatched sense of unity.
Here is a list of sports and their teams in Denver:
Rockies - Baseball (MLB)
Rapids - Soccer (MLS)
Broncos - American Football (NFL)
Denver Nuggets - Basketball (NBA)
If you're looking for more information on tickets and/or buying tickets, check out ticketmaster.com which has all the sporting events in Denver.
As day turns to night the city's streets come alive with a diverse range of bars, clubs, and entertainment venues, each offering a unique flavour of the city's spirit. Whether you're looking to unwind with friends over a cold brew from a local brewery or immerse yourself in the rhythm of live music, Denver's nightlife scene caters to every taste.
8. Tubing
When it comes to embracing the thrilling combination of adventure and fun, few experiences match the adventure of tubing. The state's vibrant energy extends beyond its streets and into its rivers, where tubing down the refreshing waters offers a unique way to savour the city's natural beauty while indulging in a burst of excitement. Especially when the water is rough.
The feeling of the cool water against your skin and the gentle movements of the tube beneath you create a sense of freedom that's both invigorating and soothing. Tubing is a must, whether you manage to do it in Colorado or elsewhere.
For more information on tubing and where to river tube in Colorado check out this article on 303Magazine.com.
7. The Rocky Mountains - Hiking the 14ers
The term "14ers" refers to mountain peaks that have an elevation of 14,000 feet or more above sea level. There are 58 of these monumental peaks in Colorado so you'll need to stay for a while to go through them all.
In the realm of adventure and the pursuit of reaching peaks, hiking the 14ers of the Rocky Mountains stands as a pinnacle achievement that embodies the spirit of Colorado. The experience of hiking the 14ers extends beyond the physical challenge; it's a profound connection with the essence of the Rocky Mountains.
Standing at any summit, is a feeling of a sense of accomplishment, standing at a 14000-foot (or more) summit is a sense of accomplishment that's impossible to replicate.
6. Boulder
Boulder boasts a lively and culturally rich scene that captivates visitors and locals alike. The city's streets are lined with an eclectic mix of boutiques, galleries, and restaurants, each contributing to its unique charm.
Whether you're hiking the trails that wind around these natural wonders or simply gazing at their grandeur from a distance, the Flatirons add a touch of wonder to Boulder's already vibrant character.
5. Colorado Springs - Manitou Incline & Garden of the Gods
Colorado Springs boasts some really unique hiking trails and picturesque landscapes. The Manitou Incline is so unique that I've done another blog entirely on my walk up the 2000-plus steps.
A stone's throw away from each other, the Garden of the Gods and the Manitou Incline demand that you spend at least a day exploring and hiking the area. And with the Manitou Incline located on Pikes Peak, one of the famous 14ers in Colorado, there is plenty of reason to stay for longer.
Whether you're seeking an adrenaline-pumping challenge or a moment of serene contemplation, these attractions offer experiences that capture the heart. If this resonates with you, Booking.com presents fantastic offers in Manitou Springs.
4. Steamboat Springs - Strawberry Hot Springs
This is the one that surprised me the most as I had never heard of Steamboat before arriving in Colorado, but now I'm glad I have.
First of all, I need to mention that Colorado is full of hot spring areas to visit. Strawberry Hot Springs just happens to be in an area that boasts some incredible scenery.
It's a lively town, known mainly for its skiing in the winter months but also for its year-round hot springs and natural beauty. When the snow melts, the area really comes alive. The Yampa River invites kayakers, rafters, and tubers to navigate its currents, while hiking trails unveil the beauty of wildflowers and lush landscapes. It feels like an area with festive spirit even if you don't go to any of the events or festivals.
There's a spectacular waterfall – Fish Creek Falls, that is worth visiting with a hiking/walking trail too. But be warned the mosquitoes here were truly out for blood. If you're the one in your group that gets the bulk of the mosquito bites then I can relate, if I were you I would get some mosquito repellent - deet free, before going on this trail.
Now here is something truly exhilarating. For beginners and experts alike. Kayaking offers a unique perspective of the Poudre River. The rush of the water against your kayak's hull and the thrill of maneuvering through challenging currents create an experience that's as immersive as it is adrenaline-pumping.
White water rafting down the Poudre River's rapids is a symphony of amazing fun and nature's raw power. This and kayaking is something I really want to get good at, I tried white water rafting in Omis, Croatia but that was more serene than exhilarating. On this river, these sports are dangerous at times, depending on where on the Poudre River you start and finish.
Each twist and turn brings a level of excitement all while taking in the stunning vistas of the surrounding Rocky Mountains.
Of course, it's not just Poudre River you can raft and kayak down, there are other options and some may be nearer to wherever you end up staying in Colorado. For more help on the river adventures near you check them out on TripAdvisor.
2. Rocky Mountain National Park
Rocky Mountain National Park is simply a must-visit location in Colorado. It's a slice of pristine wilderness and natural beauty. The national park is fun and exciting but not in a thrill-seeking way like some on this list. Instead, the park dishes out a range of enjoyable escapades that won't have you signing any extreme waiver forms.
From the tranquil shores of Emerald Lake to the vibrant town of Grand Lake, the park's array of lakes presents an inviting canvas for adventure and relaxation.
Remember that some of these lakes require you to book a time for your arrival in advance, this is separate to the time slot you will need to book for the national park main entrance.
The summer brings in the crowds so if you go on the weekend then expect long queues. Remember to book your time in advance to enter the park, these time slots can go very quickly, in fact, your best bet is to set an alarm for when the time slots become available at 5 pm the day prior. Just to clarify, if you are looking to go on Saturday, you will need to book your time slot on Friday as soon as they become available (at 5 pm). Off-peak usually has time slots available, especially during the week.
Be sure to drive on the Trail Ridge road, it's the highest paved road in all the national parks in America so you get some pretty spectacular views.
1. World Famous Ski Resorts
Colorado's ski resorts are like playgrounds for winter enthusiasts, offering much more than just pristine powder. Take a journey to renowned spots like Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride, and Vail, and you'll find that these resorts aren't just about the slopes; they're about crafting a winter experience that's as unforgettable as it is fun.
Aspen isn't just a name; it's a synonym for stylish mountain living. Beyond the iconic slopes, this town offers a cultural scene that's as vibrant as the skiing itself. Breckenridge, with its old-town charm and modern amenities, marries history with recreation. Telluride, nestled in a box canyon, is like a hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Then there's Vail, a name synonymous with winter wonder.
But these areas aren't JUST ski resorts. They are vibrant year-round, offering summer charm that rivals their winters respectively. The spring and autumn aren't too bad either. Festivals, concerts, fairs, hiking, and biking are activities that are found in abundance outside of the winter months.
In essence, these destinations don't go into hibernation; they thrive throughout the year, offering a diverse array of activities, events, and experiences that cater to every season. So, whether you're seeking snowy slopes or warm-weather adventures, Aspen, Breckenridge, Telluride, and Vail have something extraordinary to offer, no matter the time of year.
All this excitement and fun does lead to a caveat when visiting these areas – they are expensive! So not the place to go when you're on a budget.
With this list concluded it's probably worth mentioning that you'll likely need a car to get to these areas Rentalcars.com has helped me save hundreds on car hire and it may help you too.
Other things to do in Colorado:
There are more adventures worth mentioning that I didn’t manage to see myself, Colorado isn't small and I challenge you to visit and do all these activities if you can.
Black canyon
Great sand dunes
Mesa Verde National Park

Biking
Again I had the chance to do a lot of biking, if you do choose to rent a car maybe rent one that gives you the opportunity to put the bike in the back or a roof rack.
Fishing
The rivers here are great for fly fishing.
Gyms
This is the Gymsy Traveller after all. The good news for my fellow fitness freaks is that there is an abundance of gyms to choose from in Colorado. So if you don't manage to get all the activities in then at least you can get your gains in. For more on how to stay fit while travelling check out my recent blog post.
