History of Thailand as a Dangerous Country

For decades, Thailand harboured a notorious reputation as a destination plagued by political unrest, civil unrest, violent conflicts, and safety concerns for travellers. Travellers often hesitated to explore the country due to these uncertainties.

Is Thailand a safe or dangerous country now?

Now seen as the least dangerous country in Southeast Asia and after visiting the country a couple of times myself I did not ever feel unsafe in fact quite the opposite I was only ever met by very welcoming and hospitable people in my travels.

Thailand has undergone a remarkable transformation, shedding its turbulent past to emerge as one of the safest places to travel today. The Thai government has made significant strides in ensuring the safety of visitors. With improved political stability, a strong commitment to tourism safety, and enhanced security measures, Thailand has gained global recognition for its safety standards.

The UK government website is more cautious with its warnings, highlighting terrorist attacks as a concern. Again, no place is 100% safe, personally, I would not let this stop you from visiting this beautiful country. Check the link for more comprehensive information.

Naturally, I speak from the perspective of a male traveller and acknowledge that women embarking on solo journeys must consider additional safety precautions and remain exceptionally vigilant. Nevertheless, during my visits to Thailand, I encountered numerous female travellers, often travelling solo or in pairs. While it's true that concerns about safety exist, and incidents can and have occurred, I do not believe that the likelihood of such incidents is significantly higher in this country than it might be in a place like London, for instance. Thailand, like many destinations, has taken substantial steps to ensure the safety and security of its visitors, regardless of their gender, and with responsible travel practices and awareness, it is possible for women to explore this beautiful country confidently.

Vietnam

Vietnam's history as a former war-torn nation is well-documented. The scars of the Vietnam War and its turbulent aftermath cast a shadow over the country for many years. Travelling to Vietnam, once considered a risky endeavour due to the remnants of war, posed significant challenges and safety concerns.

Current Safety Situation in Vietnam

Fast forward to today, and Vietnam has emerged as a shining example of transformation. The country has undergone significant development, both socially and economically, and it now stands as one of the safest countries to visit in Southeast Asia. The Vietnamese government has invested in infrastructure and safety measures, ensuring that travellers can explore this stunning land with peace of mind.

Is Vietnam a safe place to visit now?

I will continue to rely on the guidance provided by the UK government website as a reference for essential precautions to consider before embarking on a journey to Vietnam. As a solo male traveller, my personal experiences in Ho Chi Minh, Vung Tao, and Phu Quoc Island were marked by delightful encounters with fellow explorers. One important note is to be vigilant about mosquito protection, especially in more rural areas, as there remains a malaria risk, albeit low, in these regions.

For added peace of mind, it's advisable to stock up on mosquito repellent before your departure. Here's a link to a DEET-free repellent option that, while potentially not as potent as DEET-based repellents, offers a safer alternative. However, the choice of repellent ultimately depends on your preferences and your assessment of the situation.

Jordan

History of Jordan as a Dangerous Country

Jordan, historically a land of great significance, faced periods of turmoil and unrest. Bordering conflict zones and situated in a volatile region, it was once considered a challenging destination for travellers. The echoes of regional conflicts posed safety concerns for visitors.

Another country where I saw nothing but great hospitality. The caution here is not to get too close to the “noisy neighbours”. On one side you have the ongoing tensions between Israel and Palestine in the north you have the turmoil of Syria at the moment and the constant unrest of Lebanon too, it’s safe to say for a country that usually stays out of trouble it isn’t situated near the best company.

Current Safety Situation in Jordan

At the time of writing this post, unrest, and war have broken out yet again between Israel and Palestine so I would not recommend traveling there until that situation has calmed down. There are many Palestinians living in Jordan and a spill over into Jordan may occur although personally, I do not believe it will. It’s important for me to mention that all the Palestinians I met in Jordan were very good people.

Depending on when you go it may be worth seeing what is happening with the nearby countries as Jordan itself is a very pleasant country to visit.

Overall, Jordan stands as a testament to transformation and resilience. The country has made significant strides in ensuring the safety of travellers. Its stable political environment, efficient security measures, and welcoming hospitality have made it one of the safest countries to visit in the Middle East. Cyprus

History of Cyprus as a Dangerous Country

Cyprus, a Mediterranean gem, has a history marked by divisions and conflicts. The long-standing tensions between its Greek and Turkish communities created a complex political landscape and safety concerns for travellers. The island's divided history presented challenges for those seeking peaceful exploration.

I spend a lot of time in Cyprus, I have friends both in the north and south of the divided island. Personally, I have not seen any crime in all my time visiting the island. Yes, there are bad people everywhere but personally, this is one of the safest countries in the world in my eyes. Both the north and south.

Apparently, I’m not the only one that thinks this either with this piece from express.co.uk stating that Cyprus is the 5th safest country in the world.

If you wish to book flights to Cyprus, I recommend using British Airways or Jet2 (if they fly from your departing country) both flights go direct to Larnaca, and from there you can grab a taxi to any part of the island.

Croatia

History of Croatia as a Dangerous Country

Croatia's history was once marred by conflicts during the breakup of Yugoslavia. The tumultuous period brought concerns about safety for travellers. The echoes of these events made Croatia a destination with safety considerations.

I spent a month solo travelling in Croatia from Dubrovnik all the way up the coast and ended up in Zadar towards the north of the country, incorporating a few islands along the way. I do not have a bad word to say about this country, it has everything you could want whether you are backpacking or need a weekend getaway it offers something for everyone and more.

Today, Croatia has transformed into a safe haven for travellers. Its journey from a troubled past to a peaceful present is commendable. The country's political stability, strong rule of law, and proactive measures have made it one of the safest countries to visit in Europe. Croatia's commitment to safety ensures a secure environment for exploration.

The UK government provides the barometer again and guess what, more terrorist threats in this country too. Sigh.
