Camping and fitness: Tips on keeping your gains while on the road

Main Page Image

I am going to make a prediction.

Camping and van life are going to become ever more popular.

With the rising costs of… well everything, I predict more people will opt to travel (or live) in their vans or out of their cars.

So what about the dedicated gym enthusiasts who want to experience camping without losing their gains?

Are gymgoers reluctant to embark on such journeys because they fear losing out on their gains?

I know this is something that I think about before embarking on any long journey.

In this blog, I'll explore the synergy between camping and fitness, discovering ways to stay active, enhance well-being, and fully embrace the outdoor lifestyle.

Camping and fitness combine

Embarking on a camping adventure offers not only the serenity of the great outdoors but also a unique opportunity to integrate fitness seamlessly into the experience.

I acknowledge that typical camping excursions often span a weekend or a bit longer, so this information may not be directly relevant to those scenarios.

This blog is tailored for individuals planning extended road and camping journeys, embracing van life, and catering to the broader audience of digital nomads.

We have come so far with camping, haven’t we? Camping gear, safety, and comfort are all easy to attain now. Some might say that this means you lose part of the camping experience but I beg to differ.

I think with all the advancements that we have with camping it opens up new and exciting opportunities.

I see many people, whether solo or in couples, on YouTube opting for the van life experience. But I struggle to see as many people focus on their fitness regime while travelling in this way.

There are some wonderful repurposed vans and camping equipment that offer excellent amenities, eliminating many concerns traditionally associated with camping in general. Issues like heating, cooking, and securing reliable shelter in challenging conditions are now largely taken care of.

So given these advancements, it appears to be an opportune moment to fully embrace the pursuit of maintaining fitness while camping, traveling, and immersing oneself in the van life experience. Wouldn’t you say?

This article focuses not on losing weight during camping but rather on maintaining muscle. If you've worked hard to achieve gains at the gym, the last thing you want is to compromise them during a camping trip. Additionally, shedding weight while on the move is something I've observed to be relatively easy to do anyway.

Tips on camping fitness

The most important tip is that you genuinely want to maintain your muscles. Like, really want to because it won't be easy.

I understand the novelty and excitement (and difficulty) that comes with camping and travelling. It can make you forget about keeping fit or keeping your gains. But I think staying fit while doing this is so much more rewarding.

And if you're anything like me it will be part of the whole adventure.

Purposeful even.

When I venture into this expedition, my goal is to exercise in the rain, embrace bathing in the cold, untamed rivers, and do pull-ups on tree branches if needed. All to add to the unique and integral aspect of these adventures.

Here are some simple tips to keep your focus on your gains while exploring the outdoors:

Picking the Right Location:

Selecting a suitable workout and camping spot is crucial.

Prioritize locations that offer ample space and safety for your exercises. Whether you're in the wilderness or a designated rest area during your journey, assess the surroundings to ensure an environment conducive to your fitness goals.

Dietary Discipline:

If you are in a van or RV then you are probably equipped with a spacious fridge and a cooker, allowing you to prepare the nutrient-rich meals necessary for sustaining your gains. The flexibility of van living makes it easy to stick to diets that fit your fitness goals.

It will be a little different if you are camping but if you have a larger SUV/4x4 then you should have ample space for portable versions of fridges and cookers.

In fact, I wouldn't suggest anything other than a larger vehicle, you can rent one out but if you are planning an extended trip this is likely to be very expensive. For more on pricing, you can check out rentalcars.com which always has great offers for worldwide car hire.

Gym Equipment:

Ensure you have the necessary apparatus for your workouts.

Portable and versatile equipment like resistance bands, collapsible weights, a foldable gym bench, and a sturdy yoga mat can be invaluable for maintaining your weightlifting routine on the go.

Proper Lighting:

Whether relying on natural daylight or bringing your own lighting, adequate illumination is key.

Strategically plan your workouts during daylight hours, leaving yourself plenty of daylight after your workout. Or equip yourself with portable lighting solutions to ensure a well-lit exercise space, enhancing both safety and effectiveness.

Time and Plan Your Journey:

Avoid the rush by carefully planning your travel itinerary.

Rushed schedules often lead to neglecting fitness priorities. Allocate dedicated time for your workouts, minimizing stress and allowing you to focus on maintaining your gains consistently.

Embrace Nature's Gym:

Improvise your workout routine by incorporating elements of nature.

Use trees for pull-ups, rocks for step-ups, and the ground for *bodyweight exercises. Embracing the natural surroundings not only adds variety to your regimen but also connects you with the environment.

Cardio in the Wild:

Don't overlook cardiovascular exercise.

Utilize the natural landscape for cardio workouts – hiking scenic trails, walking along picturesque routes, swimming in natural bodies of water, or biking through scenic landscapes. Nature provides an inspiring backdrop for your cardio sessions, making them both enjoyable and effective. It will be like cardio and leg day in one!

Hydration Matters:

In the realm of constant movement, staying hydrated is paramount. Ensure you have a reliable water supply, especially during outdoor workouts.

Consider investing in a portable water filtration system for extended journeys to access clean water sources. The other benefit of having extra (clean) water systems is that you can ensure you have showers on the go.

Check out a selection of water filtration systems on Amazon.

Recovery Rituals:

You're in nature you should be recovering in the best ways possible.

Pack items like foam rollers or massage balls to address muscle soreness. Embrace the tranquility of nature for restorative practices like yoga or meditation, fostering both physical and mental rejuvenation.

Go to the Gym:

Just because you are on the road doesn't mean you can't go to a gym.

I know sounds crazy but nothing is stopping you from going to an actual gym as a one-off. If you decide to camp in or near a city then you can try your luck at a local gym. You might even be able to shower there too.

*I haven't added bodyweight exercises because as good as they are if you prefer weightlifting then you need weights. I do believe that bodyweight exercises are great to do as a last resort or to 'stretch out'. Besides I have a post that explains more on this subject...

Mindful of Wildlife:

Choosing the right location should also mean being aware of your surroundings. If you use headphones be extra vigilant and perhaps only cover one ear at a time. You never know what kind of wildlife can creep up on you.

This also brings me to the point of bringing sprays and other deflectors against bears, mosquitoes, and other wildlife. Check what type of dangerous animals and insects you may encounter on your journey and accommodate from there.

Staying Hydrated:

I know I mentioned this before but it's so important I'll say it twice.

Hydration is paramount when active in the great outdoors. Always carry an ample supply of water to replenish fluids, especially during rigorous camping workouts. Consider investing in a reliable water filtration system for longer journeys where clean water sources might be scarce.

As an extra extra backup, you should have some sort of water filtration system that can clean water with UV light and all the other filtered bells and whistles so you can safely drink water in the wild.

Weather Awareness:

Keep a close eye on weather forecasts before embarking on your camping fitness adventure. Sudden changes in weather conditions can impact your safety, so pack accordingly with appropriate clothing and gear. Be prepared to adapt your workout plans based on the weather to safeguard against unforeseen challenges. The last thing you want is thunder when you are working out at the top of that hill!

Emergency Preparedness:

Prioritize your safety by having a basic understanding of first aid. Carry a well-stocked first aid kit, and acquaint yourself with essential emergency procedures. This preparedness ensures that you can address minor injuries promptly and seek professional help when needed.

You should be extra prepared for all this if you are solo travelling.

Other tips to keep in mind:

  • Connectivity for online workouts and for safety.
  • Weather - appropriate attire.
  • Document your fitness journey and inspire others.
  • Practice stretching often when you can just because of the excessive driving and small living conditions.
