Tips on camping fitness
The most important tip is that you genuinely want to maintain your muscles. Like, really want to because it won't be easy.
I understand the novelty and excitement (and difficulty) that comes with camping and travelling. It can make you forget about keeping fit or keeping your gains. But I think staying fit while doing this is so much more rewarding.
And if you're anything like me it will be part of the whole adventure.
Purposeful even.
When I venture into this expedition, my goal is to exercise in the rain, embrace bathing in the cold, untamed rivers, and do pull-ups on tree branches if needed. All to add to the unique and integral aspect of these adventures.
Here are some simple tips to keep your focus on your gains while exploring the outdoors:
Picking the Right Location:
Selecting a suitable workout and camping spot is crucial.
Prioritize locations that offer ample space and safety for your exercises. Whether you're in the wilderness or a designated rest area during your journey, assess the surroundings to ensure an environment conducive to your fitness goals.
Dietary Discipline:
If you are in a van or RV then you are probably equipped with a spacious fridge and a cooker, allowing you to prepare the nutrient-rich meals necessary for sustaining your gains. The flexibility of van living makes it easy to stick to diets that fit your fitness goals.
It will be a little different if you are camping but if you have a larger SUV/4x4 then you should have ample space for portable versions of fridges and cookers.
In fact, I wouldn't suggest anything other than a larger vehicle, you can rent one out but if you are planning an extended trip this is likely to be very expensive. For more on pricing, you can check out rentalcars.com which always has great offers for worldwide car hire.

Gym Equipment:
Ensure you have the necessary apparatus for your workouts.
Portable and versatile equipment like resistance bands, collapsible weights, a foldable gym bench, and a sturdy yoga mat can be invaluable for maintaining your weightlifting routine on the go.
Proper Lighting:
Whether relying on natural daylight or bringing your own lighting, adequate illumination is key.
Strategically plan your workouts during daylight hours, leaving yourself plenty of daylight after your workout. Or equip yourself with portable lighting solutions to ensure a well-lit exercise space, enhancing both safety and effectiveness.
Time and Plan Your Journey:
Avoid the rush by carefully planning your travel itinerary.
Rushed schedules often lead to neglecting fitness priorities. Allocate dedicated time for your workouts, minimizing stress and allowing you to focus on maintaining your gains consistently.
Embrace Nature's Gym:
Improvise your workout routine by incorporating elements of nature.
Use trees for pull-ups, rocks for step-ups, and the ground for *bodyweight exercises. Embracing the natural surroundings not only adds variety to your regimen but also connects you with the environment.

Cardio in the Wild:
Don't overlook cardiovascular exercise.
Utilize the natural landscape for cardio workouts – hiking scenic trails, walking along picturesque routes, swimming in natural bodies of water, or biking through scenic landscapes. Nature provides an inspiring backdrop for your cardio sessions, making them both enjoyable and effective. It will be like cardio and leg day in one!
Hydration Matters:
In the realm of constant movement, staying hydrated is paramount. Ensure you have a reliable water supply, especially during outdoor workouts.
Consider investing in a portable water filtration system for extended journeys to access clean water sources. The other benefit of having extra (clean) water systems is that you can ensure you have showers on the go.
Check out a selection of water filtration systems on Amazon.
Recovery Rituals:
You're in nature you should be recovering in the best ways possible.
Pack items like foam rollers or massage balls to address muscle soreness. Embrace the tranquility of nature for restorative practices like yoga or meditation, fostering both physical and mental rejuvenation.
Go to the Gym:
Just because you are on the road doesn't mean you can't go to a gym.
I know sounds crazy but nothing is stopping you from going to an actual gym as a one-off. If you decide to camp in or near a city then you can try your luck at a local gym. You might even be able to shower there too.
*I haven't added bodyweight exercises because as good as they are if you prefer weightlifting then you need weights. I do believe that bodyweight exercises are great to do as a last resort or to 'stretch out'. Besides I have a post that explains more on this subject...
