Dubrovnik, discovering the Pearl of the Adriatic

Kings landing.

I can see why Game Of Thrones chose Dubrovnik as the city of wealthy Kings and Queens. If you haven't seen GoT then I don't know what to tell you. Honestly I don't, the final season doesn't allow me to even recommend it anymore. Oh well. The good news is anyone can visit this city and enjoy what it has to offer, regardless of your preferred program choices.

And it does have a lot to offer.

This is a place where keeping fit is ingrained in the concrete you walk on. That's because the city is built on hilly and mountainous terrain, which means everywhere you walk will include steps, A LOT of steps and being out of breath A LOT of the time.

Exactly what I was looking for then. A path to constant physical exertion. I'm only half joking.

I visited beginning of August and the temperature was in the mid 30s every day. Before arriving I had some places I knew I wanted to see and I deliberately stayed around 20-30 minutes walk away from the old town – aka Kings Landing, this was what I expected. What I really didn’t expect was the amount of steps and hills I had to walk up and down every day.

The area I stayed in was called Čilipska and it was a 5 min bus ride to old town.

The good thing is with all this extra exercise my lock down belly was finally likely to shift.

Final Thoughts

Are there any good gyms in Dubrovnik?

As usual, I started my search for a gym. The gym I found was around 20 minutes walk from my apartment, up and down two hills, a mini harbour, and a park and I was there. One way to look at it is that cardio was out of the way.

The gym was pretty decent, the prices a little higher than I expected for Croatia but from what I can make out Dubrovnik is probably the most expensive city in Croatia, so there's that to consider. The price was 70kn a day/session which also gets you a free bottle of water (I thought was a nice touch). The gym is modern-ish with a good-sized and well-kept locker room. The actual gym size is decent, I think the main thing here is that it wasn't ever too busy (at least not the times I was going, which was around 3 p.m.), and there were enough machines and free weights to attain a good enough pump.

Once the gym was sorted and out of the way, I reflected on my first thoughts of Dubrovnik. There is a charm to the city, a very nice vibe with friendly people. For me, it has a mixture of similarities between Italy, Greece and Cyprus. It is in the midst of all of them so a lot of the history is shared.

I think because I watched GoT before visiting the city I had another sense of a history that didn't truly happen and which also involved dragons. Strange.

Old Town, Dubrovnik

Talking of history the old town was founded in the 7th century and has pretty much lasted unscathed to this day other than a major blip in its history of the most recent battles with neighbouring country Serbia (like Croatia, Serbia was part of Yugoslavia at the time) in the early to mid 90's which ultimately was the most damage the city received since its medieval rise.

But since then there has been much restoration and Dubrovnik is again seen as a majestic city sitting on the crystal blue coasts of the Adriatic Sea.

More on the history of Dubrovnik here. https://www.dubrovnik-travel.net/history/

There is a small beach in the old town vicinity although it is small. If you choose to go here I would suggest getting here early or bringing your own umbrella as the beach fills up quite quickly. Alternatively, I would recommend checking out the beach at Uvala Lapad, in the Lapad region which is a 10-minute drive from the old town. This beach is a lot more spacious and really nice.

How long should I spend in Dubrovnik?

I would recommend spending at least 3 days in Dubrovnik to explore as much as you can and not just the old town.

Lukrum Island, Dubrovnik

There are boats that leave the old town and reach a nearby island called Lukrum, regular ferry’s to the island set off daily (at least in the summer) and only take around 20 minutes to reach the island. Here you will be transported away from the bustling city lifestyle completely as Lukrum is a quiet, slower-paced national park.

As soon as you disembark you will gaze your eyes upon crystal clear turquoise waters almost in a cove-like setting, as you so often do in Croatia. There are plenty of places to eat here too, I sat down to have a snack here before exploring the island and ended up feeding a baby peacock, which then ran off to it's Mum to speak about it's encounter with me, I presume. Oh yes, there is an abundance of wildlife here and peacocks are one of the island's residents.

You need a good few hours to explore this island. More than that if you wish to take a dip and sunbathe. For those of you who like to 'hang out' at nudists beaches, there is a nudist beach available on one of the more secluded beaches.

I would suggest grabbing a map or just taking the path that doesn't lead to the nudist beach and you'll eventually find your way around the island. One path that should be explored is 'the path of paradise'. This path leads to the highest peak of the island, it is quite steep and is very pleasantly presented and the views at the top are amazing.

The island is very well looked after, boasting extremely well-kept gardens, parks, beaches, views, a little history, and good food, what else can you want?

Well, maybe something a little steeper...

Mount Srd, Dubrovnik

Walk up Mount Srd, Dubrovnik

Another great place to visit is Mount Srd. I set off on this mini hike on a whim, thankfully I had timed it so it wasn't in the peak sun-scorching hours of the early afternoon. It was just after. The only issue is I had to make do with only one small bottle of water which was NOT ideal. (Don't be like me, please bring more water on endeavours like this, it's the sensible thing to do) The reason you should time your hike after 3 p.m. (in summer) is that it takes around 1 hour (on average) to hike.

When you reach the top you have magnificent views of the sunset and the city in all its splendour.

The alternative is to go up on the cable car but I would urge against it and do your days' exercise, not only are you going to really enjoy the hike up through nature but you'll also feel better at the end of it. Now, it's fair enough to take the cable car down but if you do decide to brave the way back down on foot then remember to bring a torch, you will not see anything on the way back when night falls.

There are great views of the city from this peak and a very popular restaurant sits atop the mountain, although if you do choose to eat here I would consider calling up for a reservation as it is popular and does get very busy.

This was the first out of two mountain I hiked in Croatia although the second one was a lot higher and involved an e-bike. That was in Makarska, the Croatian Riviera in Biokovo National Park to read about that gruelling ride, check out the post here.

Difficulty level hiking Mount Srd:

It was only an hour's trek up, so it wasn't really that difficult hiking this mountain. It was extremely rewarding though. I would suggest getting there before sunset so you can see spectacular views of the city below during this mesmerizing time.

Final Thoughts on Dubrovnik

Dubrovnik is the more commercial of the Croatian cities I would say, due to this the prices seem to be higher than elsewhere. This should not deter you from visiting, Dubrovnik is a really beautiful city I'd go as far to say it is one of the best cities I have personally visited in the Mediterranean. I feel 5 days to a week is a good amount of time here as it offers the relaxation of a holiday with its beaches, coffee shops, and bars but also the history and beauty. I guess it isn't surprising when you consider the city's nickname of, 'The Pearl of the Adriatic'. https://en.unesco.org/mediabank/21323/
