Enfield is a vibrant borough in North London, that welcomes travellers and fitness enthusiasts with open arms. Known for its lush green spaces and a network of cycling routes that stretch from central London to out of London, past the green belt.

I’ve spent most of my adult life living in North London and Enfield has been at the heart of that. It’s safe to say I know it well.

Although I am privileged enough to be able to travel around the world now, I continue to make an effort to cycle to the parks whenever I'm back in town.

We're about to uncover the best ways to stay active, explore, and have a blast while cycling through this charming region and the parks on offer.

Overview of Cycling Routes in Enfield

London has been making a lot of effort to create bike lanes as much as possible without disrupting the infrastructure of the old narrow roads (and pavements) too much. Sometimes they don’t make the best decisions here, if I’m putting it nicely. Nevertheless, Enfield continues to offer great cycle routes, even going in and out of London.

The routes I have discovered are a mix of off-road (mountain biking trails), on-road, and cycle lanes. Time to don that helmet and double-check that your bike is all set with proper lighting.

There's no need to break the bank on front and rear lights – Amazon offers a plethora of affordable options that get the job done. Remember, it's not just about you seeing the way, but also making sure you're visible to others.

Benefits of cycling

Engaging in regular cycling workouts and exercises offers a multitude of benefits that extend beyond just physical fitness. As you pedal through the enchanting parks of Enfield, you're not only giving your muscles a good workout but also boosting your cardiovascular health. The rhythmic motion of cycling serves as a low-impact yet effective exercise, making it suitable for individuals of all fitness levels.

Whether you're navigating the designated cycle paths in Enfield or venturing off-road for a more challenging experience, each pedal stroke contributes to improved endurance and strength. Additionally, cycling provides a sense of freedom and exploration, allowing you to soak in the beauty of your surroundings while engaging in a fulfilling workout.

In fact, it’s now my favourite way to get around. When I am in a new city one of the first things I look out for is whether I can cycle there. Walking is great too but you can cover so much more ground on a bike, you can save on transport fees, improve your fitness and muscle, and just have fun.

Regrettably, the nearest bike rental store to Enfield town is located in a neighbouring town named Chingford. If you're situated in Enfield, you have a few options: hop on a bus or summon a taxi (available near Enfield Town train station), or request an Uber ride. Interestingly, your initial bike adventure will start while returning from the bike shop. Check Gofurthercycling.co.uk for more info on your bike hire.

But let's cut to the chase; here's my rundown of the Enfield parks that are perfect for your cycling adventures.

For argument's sake, I will assume to start the cycle route(s) from Enfield Town to each park.

5. Enfield Playing Fields

I have included this because it is a large park pretty much in the heart of Enfield but also because this exemplifies the typical park landscape of Enfield's parks. Lots of space that caters to outdoor and sports enthusiasts.

As evident from the map, the park is located next to another green space named Bush Hill Park, making it convenient to explore both areas by bicycle, you will be sure to have sufficient time to enjoy both destinations.

4. Grovelands Park

Spanning approximately 92 acres, the park is known for its serene atmosphere and lush greenery. It features a large lake at its center, surrounded by walking paths and well-maintained gardens, making it a popular destination and cut-through route for bikers and leisurely strolls alike.

Check out the route on Google Maps here.

Not only is the park a beautiful place to visit and cycle to, but the area around the park is also beautiful. From the amazing mansions of Board Walk to the surrounding towns of Southgate and Winchmore Hill. This area has everything you need for a day out on the bike.

3. Whitewebbs, Forty Hall & Hillyfields

Whitewebbs area is lush with some mesmerizing cycle routes

I see you noticed three different names in one section here but that is because it’s basically one big area separated only by a main road.

Dominating the landscape is the impressive Forty Hall, a grand stately residence that has transformed into a venue for events, weddings, and guided history tours. The expansive grounds enveloping the mansion hold tremendous appeal for a wide range of visitors. From families enjoying leisurely strolls to those embarking on family bike rides, the park caters to dog walkers, youngsters, and seniors alike. The abundant trails on offer present a delightful challenge, and tackling all of them within a single day might prove a bit ambitious, especially considering the inclusion of Hillyfields in the mix.

For this adventure, opting for mountain bikes is highly recommended, as the majority of trails veer off-road. There are one or two hilly spots but nothing too difficult. This is a highly enjoyable ride, especially if you’re lucky enough to have clear skies then you’re really in for a treat.

Difficulty level: easy - slightly moderate

Check out the route on Google Maps here. Take a peek at the map – you'll spot numerous charming trails leading to the same destinations. Don't hesitate to venture off the route I've suggested; go with the flow, because there are plenty of delightful trails to explore.

2. River Lea

So this isn’t as much of a park as it is an actual trail, The River Lea trail stretches from Central London all the way up to Hoddesdon. That’s a long way!

The ride along the river offers a relaxing, beautiful, and easy ride to really get the wind in your hair.

Great for a mountain bike as the trail is gravelly for a lot of the journey.

Heading South - The trail to Walthamstow Wetlands (London Wildlife Trust):

You can be in Walthamstow (east London) within an hour (45 minutes or so) as shown on the map below but why stop there? This trail can lead all the way to Central London if you want to go the distance.

Check out the route on Google Maps here.

Heading North - The trail to Hoddesdon:

Or you can go the other way north (out of London) and visit the picturesque town of Hoddesdon. Roughly an hour's ride from Enfield this would be a great place to dine, with its many delicious restaurants to take a pit stop before heading back to Enfield.

The trail along the River Lea is not to be missed, especially if the sun is out. It really is a serene ride.

1. Trent Park

Trent Park is huge.

Known to host massive festivals in recent times, I appreciate the park as one of the most beautiful areas to visit in Enfield and the random history it serves.

Did you know Trent Park once served as a site for military intelligence during WW2. In fact, prisoners of war were held and treated with unexpected kindness, aiming to coax them into sharing secrets with one another. Little did they know, the room was discreetly bugged, eavesdropping on their discussions.

It’s safe to say, you will need a whole day to explore this park so bring your picnic.

A must-visit location here is the obelisk whereby origins trace back to the 18th century when it was erected to commemorate a visit by King George III and Queen Charlotte. Another great attraction is GoApe - an outdoor adventure course for thrill and fun seekers. The treetop adventure course is complete with zip lines and challenging obstacles among the trees.

For more on the fun GoApe adventures check it out on TripAdvisor where you can book tickets in advance too.

A mountain bike is highly recommended for this route, not so much for getting to the park as the route from Enfield Town is mostly made up of bike lanes but the off-roading within the park, in between the trees and woods, is truly fantastic with a mountain bike. Nevertheless, you could stick to the tarmac and still have an amazing ride around the park.

Other Parks worth mentioning

Cedar Park in Cheshunt not exactly in Enfield but right on the outskirts and a pleasant ride out of London.

Enfield Town Park as mentioned in park number 5 most standard parks in Enfield share a similarity, with this park being so close to the actual town of Enfield it's worth noting in case you don't have a bike but wish to go for a stroll instead.

Tips for Cycling in Enfield

I would say Enfield has ample bike lanes and parks to cut through in order for you to be safe and away from the road - if that’s what you prefer. Of course, I would always urge you to wear a helmet despite that. There are moments where you will have to be on the road and for the most part I haven't had many issues here with the drivers. But needless to say, you always have to be careful.

Having high-visibility clothing, lights on the bike, and awareness of your surroundings can make a big difference
