The History of Famagusta: Tracing Centuries of Legacy

In the heart of Northern Cyprus, Famagusta proudly bears witness to centuries of history, its streets echoing the tales of empires, battles, and the ebb and flow of time. As we delve into the annals of Famagusta's past, a remarkable narrative unfolds, rich in heritage and marked by the imprints of mighty civilizations.

During the medieval period, Famagusta emerged as a pivotal port city, a bustling hub of trade and culture that attracted the attention of powerful empires. One of the most iconic remnants of this era is the Venetian Walls, a testament to the influence of the Venetian Republic. These colossal fortifications enveloped the city, standing tall against the tides of time. Today, they serve as a reminder of the city's strategic significance and the architectural prowess of the Venetians.

However, the influence of empires did not end with the Venetians. The Romans, too, left their indelible mark on Famagusta. As you explore this city, remnants of Roman architecture and engineering whisper stories of their reign. The Salamis ruins are one of the most popular.

Yet, amidst this rich history, Famagusta holds a chilling secret – Varosha, the Ghost Town. Once a thriving tourist destination, Varosha now stands frozen in time, abandoned and eerily silent. I have delved into the haunting story of Varosha, its deserted buildings, and the enigmatic events that led to its desolation. Check out Varosha post here.

From medieval glory to modern-day mystery, Famagusta's history is a tapestry of captivating tales. As we traverse its streets and unravel its enigmas, you'll witness the echoes of empires and the enduring spirit of a city that has seen it all.

Other empires and civilizations have made an imprint on not only Famagusta but Cyprus as a whole.

  • Byzantine Empire:
Before the Venetians, Famagusta was under Byzantine rule. Their influence can still be seen in some architectural elements and the early Christian churches scattered across the city.
  • Lusignans:
The Lusignan dynasty held control over Famagusta during the Middle Ages, adding to the city's rich heritage. Famagusta served as their main port and commercial center, reflecting their influence.
  • Ottoman Empire:
In the late 16th century, the Ottomans conquered Famagusta, leaving their own architectural and cultural imprint. Mosques, public baths, and other structures from this era can be found in the city.
  • British Colonial Period:
Famagusta, along with the rest of Cyprus, was part of the British Empire in the 20th century. The British administration had a lasting influence on the island's governance and infrastructure.

These diverse empires and civilizations have collectively shaped Famagusta's unique character, making it a living history book where each chapter reveals a different facet of its past.

It’s worth noting that Famagusta is called Magusa (pronounced Mau-sah or Mah-goo-sah) or Gazimagusa by the Turkish speaking residents of the island and also known as Ammochostos by the Greek speaking residents of Cyprus.

Beaches in Famagusta & the East Coast of Cyprus

Probably my favourite aspect to speak about when it comes to Famagusta.

The coast of the east of Cyprus offers, in my opinion, the best beaches in all of Cyprus. From the recently opened Varosha beach all the way up to Golden Beach in Karpaz peninsula (the tip of Cyprus). Here are a few beaches that are a must-visit on the east coast.

  1. Varosha Beach - A beach in the heart of the ghost town, untouched for generations, the crystal clear waters are a sight to see. The juxtaposition of an eerie inland town and a sublime beach make for a unique experience.
  2. Glapsides Beach (& Silver Beach) - This beach is at the edge of Famagusta, a truly beautiful open stretch of sand and coastline with clear waters and golden sand. Very family-friendly as the water remains shallow for a long stretch.
  3. Bafra area - New hotels have been built in Bafra due to the amazing stretch of coastline this area has to offer. Albeit this is no longer officially in Famagusta it is an easy drive from the town and recommended if you have a car.
  4. Golden Beach/Turtle Beach - Saving the best till last, Karpaz is found on the peninsula of Cyprus, the beaches here rival that of the Caribbean and Southeast Asia. Stunning untouched sands. If you do not like a quiet getaway then this isn't for you. If you do visit this beach be sure to bring your own umbrella and towels. More on Golden Beach and Karpaz coming soon.

It’s worth noting that there are spots along this coast that don’t have names, you can pull over and find a patch of coastline that will be entirely yours for the day. Simply amazing.

Accommodations in Famagusta

When it comes to planning your stay in Famagusta, you're in for a delightful dilemma. The city offers a diverse range of accommodation options, ensuring that every traveller finds their perfect haven amidst the rich tapestry of history. Let's explore the best places to stay in Famagusta, from charming hotels to serene resorts and cozy vacation rentals.

It’s important to know that when people google Where is Famagusta? It shows you something like this…

a map of famgusta taken from Google maps

Now, this is undoubtedly accurate; however, when it comes to accommodations, I'd like to mention options that are situated slightly beyond this zone. The reason for this is that when you visit North Cyprus, relying solely on the bus system can be challenging. While taxis are reasonably priced, the most efficient way to explore the region is by car, which means renting one. Once again, the cost of renting a compact car in this area is quite affordable and grants you the freedom to explore not only Famagusta but much more. As you can see from some of the attractions mentioned above, if you don't have access to a car rental, you might miss out on the treasures that North Cyprus has to offer.

For those travellers who have the means to rent a car, it's a wise choice to consider accommodations a bit further along the road, in areas like Iskele or even Bogaz. These regions are less bustling and feature beautiful beaches, making them an excellent base for visiting the Karpaz peninsula or the 'tip' of the island, which is a must-see.

Here is a list of the best hotels in Famagusta and further up the east coast. In order of vicinity to Famagusta old town centre.

  1. Guest houses in the old town - If you wish to stay in the old town (within the Venetian walls) then follow the link for the best guest houses to stay in. (mid-range)
  2. Arkin Palm Beach Hotel - One of the most famous hotels in north Cyprus overlooking the sea to the east and the ghost town of Varosha coastline. If you are not able to hire a car this is your best choice. (luxury hotel)
  3. Grand Sapphire Hotel - if you wish to stay in Famagusta but in the more modern part then this hotel is a great option located in the hustle and bustle of Famagusta ‘new town’. (mid-range)
  4. Salamis Bay - technically just outside of Famagusta this is another hugely popular hotel on the island, aptly named after the salamis Roman ruins nearby. Again you do not necessarily need a car here as you can grab a taxi to visit all the main attractions within Famagusta. (luxury hotel)
  5. Crown Salamis Hotel - Iskele (budget to mid range)
  6. Arkin Iskele Hotel - Iskele (luxury hotel)
  7. Osman Aga Hotel - Iskele (budget to mid-range)
  8. Kaya Artemis Hotel - Bafra (luxury)
  9. Noah's Ark - Bafra (luxury)
  10. Limak Cyprus Hotel - Bafra (luxury)
  11. Karpaz Gate Marina - Karpaz (mid-range)
  12. Villa Lembos - Karpaz (mid-range)

Considerable effort has been invested in the local hotel scene in recent years. Some establishments are brand new, which influences their pricing. In this guide, I've curated a selection that encompasses both affordable and high-end options. If you prefer apartments or more budget-friendly choices, you can explore additional listings on booking.com. Simply follow the provided link to access a comprehensive list of hotels in this region.

Getting to Famagusta

Getting to Famagusta is the first step on your journey to this remarkable city. In this section, I'll guide you on how to reach Famagusta and provide valuable travel tips. From transportation options to crossing the Cyprus border, I've got you covered.

1. Transportation Options:

Famagusta, located in the enchanting realm of North Cyprus, is accessible via various transportation modes. You can arrive by air, landing at Ercan Airport or using the Larnaca International Airport in Southern Cyprus.

Ercan Airport is nearer to Nicosia than Famagusta and you will either need to hire a car from the airport or arrange a taxi to Famagusta, this usually takes around 35-45 minutes. As North Cyprus is not recognized as a country by any country other than Turkey, you will HAVE TO stop off in Turkey first to get on a connecting flight to Ercan Airport in North Cyprus. However, you will not have that issue if you are looking to fly into Larnaca Airport which is located in the Southern part of the island. If you land in Larnaca and head to Famagusta from there you will need to cross the land border which acts the same as any other border crossing, don’t forget your passport! It will take roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Larnaca to Famagusta by car.

There are more intricate rules to hiring a car from the south to cross the border by yourself, however, this is not a simple process and I do not recommend it. I recommend crossing the border with a taxi and hiring a car in the north (likely more affordable) if you are looking for an extended stay in the north.

2. Crossing the Cyprus Border:

In case you didn’t know by now Cyprus is a split country with the Greek Cypriots in the south and the Turkish Cypriots (Turkish-occupied) in the north. Famagusta plays a significant role in the division of North and South Cyprus. To navigate the intricacies of crossing the Cyprus border, ensure you have the required documentation and follow any guidelines in place. For more on crossing the border check out this post on ercanairport.com.

3. Famagusta: A Tale of Two Cities:

The contrast between Famagusta and the capital city of Cyprus, often referred to as Nicosia, is fascinating. While Nicosia stands as a bustling metropolis, Famagusta exudes historical charm and a more tranquil atmosphere. This section reflects on the distinctions between these two cities and how they coexist on the same island.

Getting to Famagusta is the gateway to uncovering the secrets and treasures of Northern Cyprus. With a variety of travel options at your disposal, you can embark on a journey that promises rich experiences, historical revelations, and the captivating duality of this unique island.
