Now, this is undoubtedly accurate; however, when it comes to accommodations, I'd like to mention options that are situated slightly beyond this zone. The reason for this is that when you visit North Cyprus, relying solely on the bus system can be challenging. While taxis are reasonably priced, the most efficient way to explore the region is by car, which means renting one. Once again, the cost of renting a compact car in this area is quite affordable and grants you the freedom to explore not only Famagusta but much more. As you can see from some of the attractions mentioned above, if you don't have access to a car rental, you might miss out on the treasures that North Cyprus has to offer.

For those travellers who have the means to rent a car, it's a wise choice to consider accommodations a bit further along the road, in areas like Iskele or even Bogaz. These regions are less bustling and feature beautiful beaches, making them an excellent base for visiting the Karpaz peninsula or the 'tip' of the island, which is a must-see.

Getting to Famagusta

Getting to Famagusta is the first step on your journey to this remarkable city. In this section, I'll guide you on how to reach Famagusta and provide valuable travel tips. From transportation options to crossing the Cyprus border, I've got you covered.

1. Transportation Options:

Famagusta, located in the enchanting realm of North Cyprus, is accessible via various transportation modes. You can arrive by air, landing at Ercan Airport or using the Larnaca International Airport in Southern Cyprus. 

Ercan Airport is nearer to Nicosia than Famagusta and you will either need to hire a car from the airport or arrange a taxi to Famagusta, this usually takes around 35-45 minutes. As North Cyprus is not recognized as a country by any country other than Turkey, you will HAVE TO stop off in Turkey first to get on a connecting flight to Ercan Airport in North Cyprus. However, you will not have that issue if you are looking to fly into Larnaca Airport which is located in the Southern part of the island. If you land in Larnaca and head to Famagusta from there you will need to cross the land border which acts the same as any other border crossing, don’t forget your passport! It will take roughly 45 minutes to an hour from Larnaca to Famagusta by car.  

There are more intricate rules to hiring a car from the south to cross the border by yourself, however, this is not a simple process and I do not recommend it. I recommend crossing the border with a taxi and hiring a car in the north (likely more affordable) if you are looking for an extended stay in the north.

In case you didn’t know by now Cyprus is a split country with the Greek Cypriots in the south and the Turkish Cypriots (Turkish-occupied) in the north. Famagusta plays a significant role in the division of North and South Cyprus.
