Things to do in Horsetooth

Horsetooth Reservoir offers a plethora of exciting activities for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. From exhilarating water-based adventures like boating, kayaking, and paddle boarding to tranquil fishing moments by the lakeshore, there's something for everyone to enjoy.

One of the highlights of the area is the mesmerizing Horsetooth Falls, a cascading waterfall that can be reached via a moderately challenging hike. The reward for your efforts is a magnificent sight as the water tumbles down the rocks into a serene pool below.

Whether you are a seasoned outdoor enthusiast or someone looking to connect with nature, Horsetooth Trails and Lake has something to offer everyone. The combination of hiking, boating, fishing, camping, and the breathtaking scenery all make it a destination worth visiting.

Hiking Trails in Horsetooth

I wasn't able to do ALL the trails and hikes in the area. There are many, with varying levels of difficulty, hikers of all skill levels can find the perfect route to explore and enjoy.

Horsetooth Mountain Open Space offers some of the most scenic and challenging hikes in the area. The trails here lead adventurers through rugged terrain, taking them to the summit of Horsetooth Mountain, where breathtaking panoramic views of the entire region await. This trail is surprisingly long and can become a little difficult as you start to reach the summit. I would advise you to bring some refreshing snacks, fruit and plenty of water.

I most enjoyed the Horsetooth Falls trail. As the name suggests the trail leads to a smallish waterfall embedded deep in an amazing nature trail. Perfect for a peaceful retreat. This trail is classed as a moderate hike, at most, so it's great for a nature walk and a bit of exercise. Is also dog friendly. There is plenty of shade on this trail but sunscreen and a hat are still advised.

If you want to embark on a walk that keeps you close to the reservoir then the Foothills Trail along the eastern edge of the reservoir is a great walk. This trail has minimal shade so be sure to use plenty of sunscreen, wear a hat, and bring enough water. The trail connects to the main road if you wish to go until the very end of this mammoth walk. Give yourself around 2-3 hours to complete the whole trail. Starting at Rotary Park off S County Road 23 and ending in Bobolink Spur Reservoir Ridge Trailhead. Or vice versa. Make sure you take a camera too for the stunning views.

Lory State Park

This part of the reservoir has an extensive network of trails all interconnected with each other.

For those seeking a more leisurely experience, Lory State Park features several picnic areas where families and friends can gather for a delightful day outdoors.

I followed the Well Gulch to loop back down to the Homestead Picnic Area, then back to the car park, this took a total of 2 hours or so walk. This trail offers ample shade, a great path for kids and dogs as the waterfall stream trickles down beside most of the path, your furry companion will thank you for the occasional refreshing dips. The shade is more so at the beginning but depending on which path you end up following it can lead you to a more open, exposed area so some sunscreen may be needed.

For those of you looking for something a little more challenging...

As mentioned there are many trails here, most of which are connected to each other. If you do not stay on the (nature trail) loop of Well Gulch then you will end up joining the Timber Trail and then eventually Arthur's Rock Trail. These trails offer great views but are significantly longer and more difficult than the Well Gulch loop. As always bring enough water.

There are areas off these paths where people congregate and find areas to relax, the reservoir offers the chance to swim in or chill on a speedboat and drink away the afternoon while listening to music. I'm not jealous you're jealous.

Warning:

All these trails are in rural Colorado's mountainous regions, so there are a few things you need to watch out for.

First, the wildlife can be dangerous, there are plenty of snakes in Colorado and although most of the snakes are not venomous there are rattlesnakes which are very dangerous. Something to be mindful of, especially if you wish to take on these trails by yourself.

Other than snakes, bears, and mountain lions are known to roam, there are slight chances of seeing them on your path in which case some bear spray is a potential lifesaver... literally.

Don't miss the chance to grab your essential bear spray (and holster) at an unbeatable price! Click here to secure your peace of mind and embrace your next outdoor escapade with confidence.

The altitude is a factor worth considering in Colorado. It's easy to overlook the state's high elevation, and even in places like Fort Collins's old town, you might feel its effects. Personally, I noticed the impact of the altitude during exercise, but even a simple task like walking up stairs in a mall revealed a noticeable difference.

When venturing on trails during summer, it's essential to be ready for the heat. Ensure you have an ample supply of water, wear a hat, apply sunscreen, and consider bringing refreshing snacks like fruits. Additionally, it's wise to begin your hike after you've already hydrated yourself.

More on how to prepare for a hike coming soon.

Horsetooth Reservoir

The Fort Collins area has many lakes and activities but the Horsetooth Reservoir is a great place for adventurers to explore. Many come to congregate here during summer and rightly so, it's not only picturesque but it can offer a respite from the blazing sun in the summer.

Picnics and boat parties are not uncommon on Horsetooth Reservoir

Popular activities on the reservoir include:

  • Paddle Boarding
  • Jet Skiing
  • Boating
  • Fishing
  • Kayaking
  • Swimming
  • Water Skiing
  • Camping

If you get here early enough you can find yourself a great location to set up for the day. This will give you 'front row seats' to the water and usually a great view of the whole area. At the edges of the reservoir, you'll find cabana-style spots that warmly welcome groups and families. These areas feature built-in barbecue pits and shelters, providing a perfect setting for gatherings and picnics.

There are a couple of places you can buy or rent water activities from. These places masquerade as shipping containers but inside is a treasure trove of activities, including kayaks, paddle boards, and rubber rings to float on.

One of these rental spots is in the Horsetooth Reservoir South Bay Campground. The other is in the Swimming Area at Horsetooth Reservoir near the Sunrise Picnic area. There's one more in Satanka Cove. All these areas have car parks and the Marina also boasts a campground.

Car parks are usually $10 for the day.

For RV parking it's best to head a little further up the mountain, from the Marina, towards Horsetooth Mountain Open Space at the Horsetooth Inn and RV Park.

Nearby Attractions

If you do manage to post up here for a few days or more, then it is worth checking some nearby attractions. The Rocky Mountain National Park is not to be missed, the Cache la Poudre River Canyon is worth a look at and you can even look to see where you can do some tubing along the Poudre River while you're there. Boulder isn’t too far either for more amazing trails and hiking – more on this coming soon.

If you feel like relaxing in a bar or restaurant then check out Fort Collins's very own old town. It offers a great selection of bars and lounges with a vibrant atmosphere.

If you travel a little further you have the world-renowned ski resort Aspen, Breckenridge, Steamboat Springs and Estes Park – where you can visit The Stanley Hotel made famous by The Shining film. Or you can take the challenging hike up the unique Manitou Incline in Colorado Springs (Over 2000 steps up!). There really is something for everyone.

Final Thoughts on Horsetooth

Fort Collins has earned a spot on my Top 15 Best Cities for Active Travel, and it's well-deserved. The abundance of activities in this area guarantees a fantastic time. Whether you're travelling by RV or car, a visit to Horsetooth Reservoir is an absolute must.

With a diverse range of activities, from hiking and boating to fishing and camping, Horsetooth caters to every adventurer's desires. The scenic beauty of the area sets the stage for an unforgettable journey into nature's embrace.

However, as with any wilderness exploration, it's essential to be mindful of potential hazards. Wildlife encounters, including rattlesnakes, bears, and mountain lions, require caution and preparedness. Moreover, the region's high altitude demands consideration and proper hydration during outdoor excursions, particularly in the summer heat.

Nevertheless, the rewards of exploring Fort Collins and the Horsetooth area are boundless. Whether you're seeking peaceful retreats, heart-pumping adventures, or moments of connection with nature, Horsetooth Trails and Lake deliver an experience like no other.
