Exploring Cyprus: A Mediterranean Gem Amidst Geopolitical Realities

I don't usually post the latest news stories but recently I have been asked if any issues have been spilling over into Cyprus due to the Israel-Hamas conflict.

At the time of writing this, the Israel-Hamas conflict rages on and I am currently in Cyprus.

Now let's be clear, Cyprus is a paradise island and a popular tourist destination for many holidaygoers. But a history of conflict and its unique geographical position near the Middle East and regional conflict zones, might raise some questions about safety and travelling to Cyprus.

Here's a bit of context. Cyprus has its own unique story, including the enduring Cyprus problem and the establishment of a UN buffer zone. These factors play a significant role in understanding the island's geopolitical landscape.

I have written a blog on Varosha - The Ghost Town in Famagusta, left abandoned since 1974 and the thoughts surrounding that.

Despite that, Cyprus remains a secure travel destination. Whether you are visiting the north or south of the island.

Is Cyprus a Safe Haven?

Cyprus, nestled in the Mediterranean, indeed provides an inviting atmosphere for travellers, and in terms of safety, it has a commendable track record. The UK Foreign Office maintains a positive stance on travel to this island paradise, even during the backdrop of regional tensions like the Israel-Hamas conflict.

The fact there is a heavy influx of people from Israel at the moment says a lot about the safety in Cyprus.

While Cyprus offers a largely secure environment for your travel endeavours, there's a twist to consider. The British government does not officially recognize the self-declared (north) Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus as stated in the UK Foreign Office document.

Because of the fact the north 'self-declared' part of the island is not recognised it gives me incentive to write more about it. I am currently in north Cyprus and have travelled here for many years and have never witnessed any crime outside of a fight between locals when the football is on. Of course, nowhere is 100% safe.

I have a post on 5 Dangerous Countries that are now considered safe - Cyprus is one of them, follow the link to see what the other 4 countries are.

Cyprus and the Israel-Hamas Conflict

Fortunately, Cyprus has managed to maintain a level of safety even during these tumultuous times. The island itself has not been directly impacted by the fighting between Israel and Hamas. Nevertheless, it's essential to note that Cyprus is already home to a significant Israeli population, and this community has seen an increase in numbers since the conflict began.

I landed in Larnaca since the conflict in Israel-Hamas began and noticed many, many flights coming from Tel Aviv. This influx has prompted local authorities to heighten security measures, ensuring the overall safety of both residents and visitors. So, while Cyprus remains a favourable destination, it's wise to stay informed and exercise vigilance during your stay.

So, is it safe to travel to Cyprus right now? The UK Foreign Office believes it is, though it is still wise to stay cautious.

As I am currently here in Cyprus, I would say this is an ideal moment for a visit. The weather is delightful in October, with temperatures ranging from the high 20s to even the low 30s. If you are in the UK then I know how delightful that sounds. If you decide to make your travel plans, I highly recommend exploring Famagusta in the north. To discover why it's such a fantastic choice, take a look at the provided link.

Other prominent cities on the island are equally worth exploring at this time. Limassol, Larnaca, Girne (Kyrenia), and the distinctive split capital, Nicosia, offer their own unique charm and experiences. If you're considering a journey to the Troodos Mountains, it's a splendid choice, but remember to pack some extra layers if you plan to embark on a hiking adventure. For those seeking an effortless trek, don't miss the opportunity to witness the enchanting Kaledonia Falls, where a beautiful waterfall awaits your discovery.

The UK Foreign Office's favourable stance and Cyprus's impressive track record as a secure haven for visitors provide ample assurance.

I've considered the unique circumstances surrounding Cyprus, particularly its proximity to conflict zones, the ongoing Cyprus problem, and the influence of regional events. Despite these factors, Cyprus remains a delightful choice for adventure and wellness.

Whether you seek the natural beauty of its landscapes, the cultural richness of its cities, or the tranquillity of the Troodos Mountains, Cyprus has much to offer. While embarking on your journey, stay informed, exercise vigilance, and embrace all that this Mediterranean gem has to offer.
