Main Page Image

Located in Manitou Springs, Colorado, the Manitou Incline is a renowned and challenging hiking trail that attracts outdoor enthusiasts from all over the state. Just a short drive from both Denver and Fort Collins, this iconic trail is a must-visit destination for those seeking an exhilarating adventure in the heart of Colorado.

The Manitou Incline's claim to fame lies in its steep and demanding ascent, featuring a staggering elevation gain of 2,000 feet over a mere 0.88 miles. The trail was originally constructed as a cable car route for transporting materials to build pipelines on Manitou Mountain, which sits at an elevation of 1840 meters (6035 feet).

Following my recent stay in Colorado this summer, I aimed to address a few significant inquiries and recount some of my notable adventures. The most anticipated question I sense you're eager to have answered is:

What is the total number of steps on the Manitou Incline?

Nowadays, the former cable car track consists of 2744 steps, offering a challenging but rewarding experience for hikers and fitness enthusiasts. A perfect active travel destination.

Pikes Peak and Alternative Trail(s)

The magnificent Rocky Mountains! The Manitou steps can be found on Pikes Peak, a towering mountain boasting an elevation of 8,590 feet (2,620 m). One of the ways to get to this peak is via the Barr Trail.

If you do end up taking the Barr trail whether from the bottom or the top, or both, then keep your eyes open for the path that splits away and leads directly to Pikes Peaks. Personally, this wasn't the mission for this day so I decided not to embark on that particular hike. If you choose to do both the steps/Incline first and then follow the path to Pikes Peak (the mountain summit), then leave plenty of time to spare as it will likely take you the whole day.

If you prefer not to tackle the Manitou steps but still have a desire to reach the peak of the Incline, again, just follow the Barr Trail all the way up, this will take you to the top of the steps. A more 'normal' hiking trail (which means less unique).

Do you walk back down Manitou Incline?

Yes, you can walk back down the Manitou Incline. Whether you are going up the steps or not there are points to head back earlier if needed. One is the Barr Trail the other is called the Northern Incline Return trail and the other is simply doing a U-turn on the steps.

Bear in mind, during the scorching Colorado summer heat, the descent becomes even more challenging. Moreover, encountering a bear while hiking down from the woods can add an extra layer of difficulty to the journey! So, tread carefully and stay prepared for any unexpected encounters along the way!

The Manitou Incline and the Barr trail are connected

The Barr trail in my opinion IS easier but not easy. You won't have to deal with the steep steps of the Incline but then that defeats the challenge of what Manitou offers. If you can, I would recommend to hike up the Incline steps and come down the Barr trail, that way you get the best of both. Either way nobody will judge your decision.

Hiking up the Manitou Incline

Colorado itself is known as the 'Mile High' state. The altitude on average is around 5000 feet, depending on where you are. So I would urge you to at least become somewhat acclimatised to the altitude if you can. I was lucky enough to spend a few months here which meant I was able to acclimatise for at least a week or so before embarking on any hiking trails.

Anticipate a slightly reduced ease of breathing compared to being at 'ground level'.

If you are going in summer, it will be hot, bring water, at least two bottles each, sunscreen and a hat. There are no fountains on these trails and you will need water. There is a convenience store/shop at the foot of the incline, grab some there.

Another great option is a Camelbak, these are slimline backpacks specially made to hold water conveniently with a canister that you can sip on as you go. Click here to explore an irresistible selection of trendy Camelbaks!

As a beginner or even an amateur hiker, the best way to take on this challenge is to take your time. I took regular stops, in the shade, so upon reaching the top of the steps I wasn't really that tired. Conserving this energy allowed me to run down the Barr trail.

In the end, the steps are challenging but not impossible even for a beginner, I've spoken about reaching mountain tops before (Rainbow Mountain in Peru or the UK's highest peak in Scotland, Ben Nevis) and the sense of achievement when you do, this was no different.

Can a beginner do the Manitou incline?

I would say as long as you pace yourself then yes, a beginner will be ok.

Now, individuals who are unfit or significantly overweight might encounter challenges in certain areas. It's important to keep in mind that the ascent can become quite steep, and at times, you'll need to be adaptable to find your path up the steps. If you suffer from vertigo, this is when you might feel a bit anxious or uneasy.

The cars in the car park look really small from such grand height. closer the people climbing the steps look tired.

How long does it take to hike up the Manitou Incline?

As you ascend, there are signposts that notify climbers of the average time it will take from that point on but of course that relies heavily on your level of fitness. Generally, I'd estimate it to be at least a 1-hour climb, plus another hour for the descent. For climbers who might be slightly less fit, it could take up to 2hours for a one-way journey.

To keep track of the steps conveniently have the number stamped on every few hundred steps. But ultimately this depends on you. I say this time and again – this is not a race. Yes, it's a challenge and challenges should be tough but you could be having fun too. Crazy I know! This may mean you or someone in your group may need regular stops if need be. In which case stop and enjoy the scenery because it is beautiful.

Where to stay near the Manitou Incline?

The area at the foot of the climb, Manitou Springs, is a great location for you to stay for a night or two. This is a very picturesque town that I am sure you will enjoy. Prices vary although they are a little more on the expensive side in peak season you can still find excellent deals on Booking.com.

If you are staying in Manitou Springs then it is worth exploring the other beautiful attractions in the area, for instance, the Garden of the Gods. I didn’t embark on this attraction because I went to Moab in Utah instead and saw similar views but at 10 times the scale and beauty. More on this to come soon. In the meantime check out the extensive reviews and experiences for the Garden of the Gods here on TripAdvisor.

Reservations and Parking

There is ample parking at the foot of the incline. Although, you may have to walk several minutes to get to the very start of the steps. Even the walk to the steps is pretty steep, make no mistake your challenge starts from the car park.

We did not make any reservations for parking nor for the trail itself but we arrived early enough to not have an issue with finding a space/overcrowding. That doesn't mean you shouldn't and that doesn't mean that you will find a space as these car parks do get full, especially on the weekend. Expect to pay around $10 - $20 for a few hours. If prompted then four hours is likely more than you will need.

Final Thoughts on Manitou Incline

The Manitou Incline is a unique and challenging climb. There are many aspects of a climb at play here, like the altitude, the heat, the steep gradient, and the danger of bears – with this in mind you can see why this can be classed as an 'extreme' hike, as mentioned on Wikipedia. While I personally wouldn't label it as extreme, exercising caution is definitely warranted.

This hike may affect your mental preparation as much as your physical, the vertigo-inducing steps almost had an effect on me too during the climb. Don't allow the fear of judgment to hold you back from walking down the incline using one of the alternative trails if needed. At the same time, don't let fear hinder your progress and determination to move forward. If you do make it to the top, like most summits you will not be disappointed.

Difficulty: 7/10

A unique climb like this deserves a 4.6/5 star rating from me.
